So That Was a Lie
Wow, was it really five months ago that I was definitely, absolutely going to start focusing on Resurrectionists as my entrance point into Malifaux and start playing?
Suffice to say that life got in the way. Between a move, some major career challenges and some family issues I've not been able to get many more games in. I have at least continued to make hobby progress! Urami are completely painted (I even got my hands on that Undertow box, woo!), Angler are fully painted, I got my hands on Transmortis and I'm about halfway through there. Finally making my gross zombie dreams a reality.
And I've taught myself to use Vassal. Or at least, I've started that process.
There is a new gaming store opening close to me in the near future and I figure if I want to play more Malifaux I'm going to have to build the community I want to see in the world. So, after sitting down and playing a few hotseat games so I can not completely embarrass myself (only mostly embarrass myself) I've signed up for the next round of the Malifaux World Series to hopefully get 5 games in.
Amusingly the gimmick for the next round is that it is being run as GG All, so fingers crossed my unfamiliarity with the specifics of various scenarios and schemes won't be as huge a handicap as it would otherwise be for some of these rounds, so long as I can get matched up against people who also missed them the first time around.
What I was not expecting from my hotseat testing was to find that I had a lot more fun with Bayou than I did with Ressers.
I can't even point to a specific reason why. Was the Bayou side winning more often than the Ressers? No, in 10 practice games Ressers won 4, Bayou won 3 and I tied 3 times (it's hard to try and play without letting the fact you know what is in both hands influence you so this is hardly a fair or meaningful test anyway).
Bayou do have access to some tools that Ressers struggle with. Marker removal is easy to access, Twelve Cups of Coffee is just absolutely nuts, did these mechanical elements feel better to use?
Well, no. I was mostly testing against Forgotten, Transmortis and Urami. None of them use markers (though locking down Kirai2 with Twelve Cups to make resummoning Ikiryo more annoying was very funny).
Ultimately, Kin was the set that inspired me to get into Malifaux to begin with. I just love the blend of goofiness and seriousness that Ophelia's crew represents. Sure, we've got gremlins mooning you and falling over from the recoil of their own weapons, but if you don't take them seriously Ophelia is still going to put two (or a half dozen) shots right between your eyes. Maybe it isn't surprising that I've gravitated back towards the faction after I've started putting them on the (virtual) table.
Over the next few weeks I'll be writing up my experiences in the MWS as I take the Bayou out for a bashing. Wish me luck!
